From the first moment when the transition from uncertainty and shakiness to the instant when we could suddenly stay upright on two wheels, there was a feeling of rightness; of balance and synergy, the forces of all that is right snapped into perfect focus. I remember the feeling when my bike left my dad's hand and I was riding on my own. The Spring day was blue sky and green trees and I felt like the figurative bird that had just discovered what his wings are for.
Since those halcyon days I have found my love for cycling to continue strong. I've mountain biked in many of the must-ride places: Moab trips, Arizona, local race courses, and our secret stashes of local single track. I've ridden my road bike along the back roads of Cache Valley, among Bison in Yellowstone, seen the far side of 60 miles per hour, and slogged through LotoJa.
I've also found that helping others discover cycling is exciting in that it provides a wonderful vehicle that is both literal and figurative; one of mankind's inspired inventions-'the peak of his attainments' and a vehicle for the imagination. The imagined part of this discovery is one of the best freedoms around. Help with improving our physical fitness, the confidence to attempt that first century, and the freedom that comes with reduced consumption. These are just a few of the many rewards a cycling lifestyle offers.
Yes, I'm excited to be here. Cache Valley and its' residents need this most divine invention. Health, happiness, and freedom!
If this is a drug, I'm addicted.
I can still remember waking up Christmas morning and seeing what every four year old boy dreams of, a new bike! Santa had brought me a beautiful sparkling silver Schwinn Thrasher with a metallic blue chain guard and matching blue grips and decals. I spent the next several years riding the trails and hitting the jumps. After a few years all the jumping took its toll (I still bear a scar on my chestÉexposed handlebar end), and the frame of my Thrasher broke-twice. I eventually graduated from my Thrasher and at 13 I got my first mountain bike. It was pink. Hey, it was 1990 and fluorescent colors were cool.
I was interested enough in bikes that I got a job in a bike shop a couple of weeks before I turned 15. I started off just assembling the cheaper bikes and before I knew it I was doing complete overhauls. Basically my hands have been greasy ever since.
Now that I'm "grown-up" and married (and have 2 kids), I am a mechanical engineer, but I can't keep away from bikes! My wife and I still mountainbike in any spare moment we can find. We love our local trails, and find that the rigorous climbs around here are good training for when we are biking out of town. Although, it's not my primary job, I still enjoy keeping the valley's residents' bikes buzzing along.
